It bothers me when game developers uses different scales for their pixel art, like Terraria and Stardew Valley. Yeah, it’s pixel art but the pixels don’t act like they’re in the same plane like in Undertale where every pixel is the same size. When I heard about Cuphead messing around with frame rates, I thought it would bother me. Everything is animated in 24 frames per second like classic animation, but everything moves in 60 frames per second because this is a modern video game and anything less is only fit for the console peasants. The thing is that the unsynchronized frame rates don’t bother me at all. The animation is a little jumpy but it never seems like the enemies have an advantage because they have hidden unpredictable frames or something like that. It works really well as a stylistic choice and I applaud the team for making so many risky decisions.
