Even though I grew up with Sonic, I never had a Sonic OC. It’s not that I wasn’t into making original characters. I had plenty of Pokemon and Digimon OCs. I think it was because the Sonic games I loved playing had pretty small casts. There was just Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik. With Pokemon, you knew that there were other ten year olds going on journeys so it was easy to imagine yourself in that world. There wasn’t lore early on about Sonic being a part of a civilization of animals that like saving the world that you could insert yourself into. I feel like if I had started later in the fandom, then I would have been more likely to create an OC. Maybe that’s why older Sonic fans dislike original characters, because they don’t connect with the games like that. Or maybe it’s because a lot of them are poorly designed.
