Incredibles 2 had one thing that I definitely did not expect and that’s spot on lighting effects. Look, I don’t expect much from kids movies in terms of artistry, but I was blown away by how beautifully everything was lit. There’s a scene lit by a pool light and another that’s dark and dull, lit by sickly green screens. It’s amazing and immersive. The best was the train chase with Elastigirl on her motorcycle. It all plays out during sunset, lit with vibrant pinks and oranges. It’s a scene that would be hell to film live action, and it really shows off the strengths of animation as a medium. There are a lot of animated films out there that feel like they don’t need to be CG. They use CG as a crutch to crank something out quickly. Incredibles 2 is not one of those films. It really digs into those things that can’t be done any other way, and I can respect the team at Pixar for that.
