Now I never played the original Okami, but I played the heck out of it’s sequel, Okamiden. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed this, but I’m a huge fan of the Nintendo handheld series ever since Gameboy Color so most of my favorite games are on those systems. I picked up Okamiden because it came out at a time when I had really lost patience with console games. I really liked the painting mechanic where you can execute certain attacks by drawing on the touch screen. It feels so natural and makes me wonder how it was pulled off in the original game. I feel like the touch screen or motion controls would actually be important for a game like this instead of how they’re normally tacked on as a gimmick. The best part of Okamiden however was the characters. You meet a bunch of memorable and interesting characters on your journey each with different abilities. I feel like there’s a nice balance between staying with a partner long enough to get to know them and keeping things interesting by switching up characters. I never felt like the game dragged on too much which is something lots of developers fall into. The art style was stunning and ported over surprisingly well to the small screen. Unfortunately, I’ve lost my original Okamiden cartridge, but I would love to play it again sometime.
