I just finished watching Captain America: Civil War. (I know, super topical.) I really liked it even though I didn’t watch the one before it. I guess some of the tension from the beginning of the movie was lost on me because of it though. The big fight scene in the airport taught me something about myself. I thought the reason I don’t usually get much enjoyment out of actions scenes is that there are no stakes, but this scene proved me wrong. I understand that the fight in the airport wasn’t just for kicks. There were consequences, but you know that everyone is holding back somewhat. They’re all friends and there’s no reason to believe that they’ll kill each other. I realized that what I want in a fight scene is for something fun to happen. Ant Man going all Kaiju and Spider Man being an adorable fanboy made me laugh. Maybe that’s why I paid more attention to what was going on rather than just tune out over mindless violence.
