Ice King is a really cool villain. (Tee hee, bad pun.) But, seriously, he’s the perfect villain for a show like Adventure Time. He isn’t much of a threat by himself most of the time so he gives way for a different kind of story to be told. As much as Finn and Jake talk about defeating monsters and saving the world, the show isn’t centered around the drive to get stronger like a shounen anime. This is a story about growing up and learning to tolerate people through the lens of wacky magical adventures. My point is that a show about growing up should have an antagonist who represents the opposite. The Ice King may be an adult but his dementia makes him act like a child. Learning to have sympathy for such a person is an important trait for Finn to have.
I love your project, which was why I clicked on this post in the first place. But I loved what you had to say about Adventure Time as well. I hadn’t thought about Ice King’s dimentia in contrast to the self-discovery and coming of age themes. Thanks for that! I also hadn’t thought of the series as being like a shounen anime but with the friendships and bonds already so developed that their focus in the show is next to nothing. That’s a fun way to look at it! Thanks for the read.
