I have a hard time categorizing Hello Kitty. There was an anime and games, but I don’t think regular people would imagine them first when someone mentions her. I’m sure there are people who would look at Hello Kitty’s simplistic style and say that she’s a cartoon, but I assume most people would think of merchandise first, toys and t-shirts. To me it’s bizarre that a character can survive on design alone, not tied down to any one type of traditional media. I can think of characters that have outlived their media, like Minions or Garfield, where the characters have stayed in the public eye despite waning interest in the original work, but there are so few characters that are popular despite not having a genre defining piece of media attached to them. That’s what makes Hello Kitty fascinating to me.
