In the She-Ra reboot Double Trouble is canonically nonbinary. There’s actually a lot of misinformation out there about nonbinary folks and I hope that this character prompts some people to look into it more.
I’m nonbinary and for me it’s because the words “man” or “woman” aren’t really accurate to who I am or who I want to be. There are a lot of combinations that aren’t widely acceptable like a woman with a beard or a man with boobs. Yeah, not all enbies are like that, but it’s so important to me to have those options, to be able to express myself the way I am the most comfortable, and using the nonbinary label just gives me so much more freedom than “he” or “she” ever did.
There are a lot of people who would look at nonbinary folks in utter confusion. I suppose it’s not the answer they want to hear, but there really wasn’t a cause or a reason. I was born this way, and I came out as nonbinary because I was tired of pretending to be someone I wasn’t, sick of wearing a costume everyday.
Honestly, I think most people are at least somewhat nonbinary. People just say things like “she’s kind of butch” or “he’s kind of girly”. These people are nonbinary, they just don’t use the label or they/them pronouns.
The more I look into specific nonbinary identities like demiboy (partially but not entirely male) and genderfae (fluid between female and nonbinary) the more I start to think that anyone who doesn’t feel %100 male or female %100 of the time is some form of nonbinary. Even people who feel apathetic towards their gender could fall under the agender spectrum.
People don’t need to show characteristics of another gender to be nonbinary, but I’m pretty sure that there is a nonbinary label for just about anyone who goes looking for one.
